Built in 1944 on a tiny 65m² site just above the Dunedin centre city, the location of this quirky, triangular shaped former shop made it ideal for re-development.
However, rather than demolish the existing building, the owners were committed to retaining it because of its heritage values, and to enhance the existing streetscape with a contemporary but sympathetic addition
The result is a new two bedroom apartment built on top of the existing brick structure, extending back over an existing garage sub-divided from the adjoining property at the rear, doubling the overall footprint from 65m² to 137m². The original brick shop was completely renovated into a high end single bedroom apartment
The gabled form of the addition, clad in durable Colorsteel to both roof and street frontages, references the vernacular of the area, and the dark grey colour picks up the iron oxide inherent in the existing clinker brick. The additional level accentuates the triangular shape of the site and provides a much admired sleek new addition to the streetscape
