The Vogel St Kitchen occupies an historic building situated in the heart of the regenerating Warehouse precinct at the southern edge of Dunedin's CBD. Occupying one and a half levels of the two storied brick former printers building, the cafe is an award winning example of historic re-use. Built in 1901 and last renovated in 1914, the building required extensive renovation to re-purpose it for its new use inluding seismic strengthening, repair or replacement of rotten timbers, repointing of brickwork and a new roof. The functional spaces of a cafe were then inserted into this. However, in doing so as many of the original features as possible were retained and left exposed including the brick walls, timber floor and support structure to the mezzanine level and the roof trusses and sarking. These features, together with a magnificent new bespoke steel stair and slatted balustrade to the mezzanine, and the seismic steel inserted to strengthen the building, give the space a chic, industrial aesthetic that celebrates it's heritage.
